The 20% project was introduced by Google, in which the company gave 20% of the time the employees worked, to create and to doing something they are passionate about. The essential question, "How will you enhance your world?" gave my partner, Wendy as well as myself the inspiration to do this project. We chose to fund raise for life straw because we know the death rate from waterborne illnesses are unfairly high and affect 769 million people all over our global community. Something as simple as filtered water, which we take for granted could make a great impact! We want not only to raise awareness about the lack of clean water in developing countries, but also provide access to safe water by doing this fundraiser. Each week we will measure our progress by the amount of money we've raised. Through our Gofundme website, we aim to raise $500 to purchase the life straws and distribute them out to students in Kenya who struggle constantly with bacteria, viruses, and parasites in their water. If we can send aid to a school where children are constantly sick and suffering, we believe it is our responsibility to aid the people who do not have the same access that we've been given.

I think this is a great opportunity for you and your partner to take part in the ongoing fight against poverty and early death. I like your spin on giving back to people who lack some basic human needs elsewhere in the world. I think this a great way to be more interconnected with global issues and the efforts to resolve them.
ReplyDeleteI know that in Southern California, in effort to conserve water, new laws mandate that toilets in houses and buildings are not allowed to have high water levels. But even in a state of drought, we still have green lawns fed with flowing water that go through multiple steps of treatment and cleaning. Will the life straws do something similar?
For the fundraising aspect, I suggest you contact local restaurants (Habit, Urbane, Menchies, Panda, Chik Fil A) or popular recreational places in Santa Clarita (Jump 5150, Top Out, Ice Station) that are willing to donate some of their profit to your cause. I know fundraising is sometimes a pain, but those places that I mentioned were generally the nicer places to ask for fundraising when I had to do it for a couple clubs.
Why did you specifically choose Kenyan students who would receive these life straws?

What a great idea! This unique idea can really impact others for you thoughtfulness and awareness of the many world problems. I will definitely support this movement in whatever way I can. Maybe if you can fund raise enough money you should not only distribute the straws to Kenya, but other suffering countries as well.
ReplyDeleteHow do you plan to get $500?

This seems like a very good opportunity to help young students who struggle with finding healthy water. I love how humanitarian this is, and I am really looking forward to seeing the joy and health that you spread with this project.
ReplyDeleteReading about this made me a bit excited, and I looked into LifeStraws. Did you know that they are 100% chemical free? I'm so fascinated to see how your fundraising will go.
A small tip for fundraising, start with something simple. So often in ASB we struggle with fundraising because we cannot do what we have planned.
Where did you find out about these life straws? Once you have received the money from fundraising, what will you do with it?
Thanks!
